Termite Control on Oil Palm Exactly

How is the termite control method in palm oil appropriately? Termite (Coptotermes curvignathus) is a widely known insect as one of the pests that cause considerable economic losses. Because the attacks are serious, these pests need to be handled seriously, especially for oil palm plantations on peatlands.

Termites can damage all parts of the oil palm plant. In contrast to wild boar pests, these animals are very greedy preyed on cultivated plants, both when still in the form of seeds, young plants, or mature plants. Termites attack palm oil by grazing and eating all parts of the plant, not least at the point of growth. That’s why heavy attacks can cause oil palm to die.

Below are the symptoms that appear if oil palm is attacked by termites, among others:

  • Visible small earthen alleys on the surface of the stems from the ground lead straight to the top of the plant.
  • Suddenly, the leaves of palm oil droop have wilted and gradually become dry.
  • The discovery of termite colonies around palm oil crops.

How to control termites can be done with two methods, namely manual and chemical. The manual method is hand-free control, while the chemical method uses chemicals to eradicate termites. An explanation of the two methods will be explained in full below.

Termite Control

Manual termite control is done by destroying the termite nest and killing the insects in it. This method will be more effective if it finds the termite queen and destroys it. But the difficulty is very difficult to find a termite nest in the oil palm plantation. Farmers usually eradicate termites seen in oil palm trunks to establish a connection between the palm tree and the termite nest.

Control of Termites Chemically

By chemical means, termite control can be performed by using chemicals that are toxic to termites. One of them you can use Regent 50 SC containing Fipronil active ingredients with dose as much as 2.50 ml / l water per palm tree. Can also use Termiban 400 EC with active ingredient Chlorpyriphos with a dose of 6.25 ml / l of water for each palm planted by termites.
